BJJ vs Wrestling – Narrated Roll – Firas Zahabi

In this episode I narrate a video I posted months ago rolling with Johnny Yates a decorated Greco-Roman wrestlers. This video is meant to highlight some of the interesting exchanges that occur between these two different grappling arts. Special thanks to Johnny for rolling with me and allowing me to film it even though this is bjj is not the discipline he is trained in.

  1. Greco. Do not do legs at all or sprawl, plus they flatten out. Soooooo. Like muay thai versus boxer.

  2. Sure strictly Bjj vs strictly wrestling you will be able be able to submit the wrestler with leglocks , heelhooks etc.. Give the wrestler a month to learn leglocks defenses and basic Bjj guard passing, he will be dominating most of the exchanges on the ground . Not to mention the advantages a wrestler has in a real fight dictating where the fight will take place .

  3. Wish Alexander Gustafsson would be part of Tristar Gym and train with you guys, he needs to go to the next level if he wants to get that belt..

  5. You need both is like shield and a sword, if a wrestler suplex you in a street you are done. Ofc to know sub and guard is very useful, luta livre and cacc is also wrestling

  6. I feel like this comment needs to be read before people comment themselves, so please take a moment before you write your angry response to Zahabi.

Sparring (rolling) is not fighting. This is not a match. There is not a winner. This doesn't go into a record. Rolling is not meaningfully different than hitting a punching bag or drilling a takedown. When you hit the punching bag, the bag does not "lose." You do not "win." They are merely training tools to help you get better.

The video is not of a fight. It's friendly sparring so Zahabi can continue to polish his skills against wrestlers, and so Johnny can (presumably) develop submission defense and expand his grappling skills. The only objective is to learn. If you join a BJJ school, you will roll like this between 2 and 5 times per day. Your opponents may have wrestling or judo backgrounds. They may be much bigger or much smaller. They may be male or female.

When you are in BJJ, this kind of encounter isn't a challenge fight, it's just another day at the office. It's totally ordinary and unremarkable. We don't derive from it profound meaning as to the power of BJJ or of our own skills.

  7. To be fair he beat you plenty of times. Your shoulders hit the ground multiple times.

Roll under catch rules next time.

    Pin or sub wins

  8. Good video !! As a wrestler, who practiced with judoka before stepping onto a bjj mat, I can appreciate this narrative. The biggest threat to me, with my background, I believe are submissions that attack the legs. They will catch you off guard in the worst way if you have no experience with this type of offense.
