Anthony Pettis vs. Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson Is Set

Anthony Pettis vs. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson Is Set | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis is reportedly set to face Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in late March at welterweight (170 pounds). Why would the former lightweight champion want to jump up a weight class against a natural welterweight who is still ranked at the top of the division? And why would Thompson risk a catastrophic loss against someone not in line for a title shot in his division? There are good reasons, actually. While I don’t necessarily love this fight, I do like it and in this video, I explain why.

  1. The reason I like this is because it takes two guys who weren't really a crucial part of their respective divisions at this particular point in time and makes good use of their talents without having to hold up some title fight or knock some contender who deserves his shot out of line. Because both of these guys at one time have been pretty big stars who have pulled off really impressive moves in the octagon effectively it feels sort of like a super fight- but without all the negative baggage that usually comes with a super fight. I really like this match up=- and I think ppl saying Pettis has no chance are just plain wrong- the size difference isn't that extreme and a dynamic kicking game can go a long ways toward balancing things out- and if anyone in this sport has a dynamic kicking game, it's both these guys. Plus, if it gets to the ground- Pettis is golden.

  2. Kind of an odd fight. Personally I’d rather see Pettis VS Dan Hooker and Wonderboy VS RDA

  3. I feel like Pettis is going to pull a t-wood and till. Just try to stay outside pick some shots and pull a decision idk or hit the ground.

  4. I love it because of the reality check of people, including pettis realizing he isnt that great of a striker and physics do matter.

  5. There's a scientific term for if you don't mind something, but also don't love it….

It's called: "Indifference", or in watercooler lingo: "Meh…"

  6. Strange move for Pettis. I don't think he'll win but Donald Cerrone had some good success at welterweight so it's intriguing.
