Direct Metal Laser Printing – Jay Leno’s Garage

Bry Ewan from Stratasys Direct Manufacturing stops by the garage to show Jay how their new technology can bypass the plastic mold process of 3D printing and go straight to metal printing.

  1. I think the U.S. Army came up with laser scintering? Shipping all the parts they need to combat zones is logistically impossible. If they didn't out and out invent it, they were the earliest adopters of it that I heard of. They were doing it close to 40 years ago.

  2. Jay this is great. Thank you for sharing this information. This is a total game changer for classic car collectors!

  3. Star trek replicators are here, soon everyone will have one in person and they will be the next Apple I phone/printer, make or e-mail your STUFF anywhere even mobile….

  4. This would have been considered science fiction just a few years ago! I wonder what kind of technology my granddaughter will see in her lifetime?

  5. Now, if this technology can be developed to be able to make parts with +/- .0001" dimensional and positional tolerance, and surface finishes down to 10um or so that won't require a seperate finish machining step, then it would really be something.

  6. The temperatue at the specific point where the laser is aimed would be very high but would be extremely localised I imagine.

  7. 3:08 JAY, LET BERNARD FINISH PLEASE:)))
I think he wanted to say how he can either scan or reproduce the tube without going in – I actually did want to know:)

  8. Id say the guy with his "yes sir, no sir" and once admitting he doesent know something – instead of providing "bullshit" hit the presentation right on.. Only thing Id pick out is the fact Jay is in my opinion worth the hassle to have the actual machine running on the background:) Although the 10 day build time of a part is a surprise to me, Id expect it to be much faster.. Maybe with titanium, but ordinary metals .. hmm:)
