Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson I: Why Did Views Change? | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

When Jon Jones edged out a victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 to retain the light heavyweight championship, there weren’t just cries of robbery for a week or a month. It lasted for quite some time. Yet, more recently, that sentiment has dramatically waned. While people’s opinions change over time, typically fights are were widely considered robberies, e.g. Shogun Rua vs. Lyoto Machida I, don’t lose that characteristic over time. This one did. Why? I have a few theories. And in any case, when Jones and Gustafsson meet for the second time at UFC 232, I don’t expect the Swede to be the people’s champion as he was immediately following the first bout with Jones. Fans seem to have changed their opinions.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. Then I think folk thought Gus won because folk equate Gus doing the best, as a win. Jones was seen as unstoppable and Gus won some rounds and busted him up so he must've won.

I think a lot of that died down is since that fight Gus has done nothing. He lost to Rumble in devastating fashion, and lost to DC in a freebie title shot. None of those losses are things to be ashamed of, but you can only have claim to elite tier so long with no elite wins. I mean in reality Gus' best wins are 2012 Shogun or 2017 Glover. It's hard to take that resume as a threat to Jones.

  2. Or… People re-watched
the fight they realized that Joe Rogan overreaction to everything that Gus did made them miss JBJ almost stopping him in the 4th and clearly winning the 5th.

  3. Luke gives Jones more respect than he deserves. Seriously. The man is a cheater and a scumbag.

  4. Different people have different opinions…. Huh? Strange. If you talk to people who thought it was a robbery then they'd think it is now. I still say that elbow changed the fight because Jones was getting his ass beat before it. Gus should have won round 4 because he was winning the whole round before the elbow way late. Gus was robbed.

  5. Why does no one remember that on the night and all through the fight fight metric showed gus out striking Jones…. All night. Then the next day they changed it for Jones. Real strange.

  6. I get your overall point about the view points changing but i think the answer is quite simple.
it all comes down to popularity..we just like Jones more than we like guss so we will give him the fight…and also the judges gave him the fight so its hard to argue when we go back now. I doubt most fans actually go back and watch the fight they just probably look at the the win loss collum and jones got one over on him. Number dont lie

  7. Gus is great but won't win a title because he's in a era with the GOAT. He's the UFC Patrick Ewing.
