Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson I: Why Did Views Change? | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

When Jon Jones edged out a victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 to retain the light heavyweight championship, there weren’t just cries of robbery for a week or a month. It lasted for quite some time. Yet, more recently, that sentiment has dramatically waned. While people’s opinions change over time, typically fights are were widely considered robberies, e.g. Shogun Rua vs. Lyoto Machida I, don’t lose that characteristic over time. This one did. Why? I have a few theories. And in any case, when Jones and Gustafsson meet for the second time at UFC 232, I don’t expect the Swede to be the people’s champion as he was immediately following the first bout with Jones. Fans seem to have changed their opinions.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. Come on luke. You just said trust but confirm. You don't even know if those fans are the same ones now. Maybe that's why there is a change. You are also saying. "people won't be rooting for Jones to lose" mostly because of your personal biased towards liking Jones. That's what it sounds like anyway. I mean look at the way you word things. "people may think he cheated" of course he's a cheater. Look at all the evidence.

  2. I think people think of Jon now as some sort of underdog. Not as a fighter but more as a victim of circumstance (suspension). And people often root for underdogs/victims and will develop biases for those individuals. Whereas in the past, people might've viewed JJ as a villain simply due to his dominance in the sport or wild behavior at the time. As far as the actual fight itself, I couldn't tell ya.

  3. I STILL believe gus won that fight. I dont see how any can score a jones win. Best case scenario for him is a draw.

  4. Jones slacked off in training and was partying hard and STILL outworked and outperformed Gus at the end of the day. That goes to show how good he is, legend.

  5. Lmfao such a clear example of a paid media shill controlling the narrative.

  6. My "hunch" is that the opinion didn't change, but simply a different demographic are now the people being vocal on the internet and they are the ones That Luke is paying attention too, I've still seen people say that Gus won that fight…all the time.

  7. Watching again it is clear that Jon won but the fact that Gus gave Jon problems was so crazy that changed our perception about the figth initially.
