5 rounds fights put athletes at risk while making fights less enjoyable for fans.

Chael Sonnen gives his argument for why there should no longer be 5 rounds fights in mixed martial arts and also why boxing fights should have fewer rounds. The risk to athletes is too great and most of the time, longer fights are less exciting.

  1. 3 round title fights just isn't enough time, they should be 5 rounders, but only for title fights. Imagine Conor vs Khabib just being 3 rounds etc. You need round 4-5 becuase that is where guys break and that's where the true champion is made. That's why we call them championship rounds. Boxing does the same thing as well. You only do 12 rounds for a title fight, everyone else does 4-10 rounds. The champion leads everyone else and draws the crowds so they should have to do more.

  2. for every incredible 5 round fight there were 10 more that half way through people thought "ugh this is 5 rounds"

  3. I think less rounds would be more entertaining fighters would be less concerned with stamina and get after it more

  4. Boxing starts at 3 3s and builds to 12 3s. Olympic boxing had head gear pro didn't. There is some equivalent precedent set. Especially considering they used to all be "amateur" cage fighter. Professional fighter is a new designation.
