Robert Whittaker, Yoel Romero and Five Round Fights

Robert Whittaker fractured his hand in his title fight with Yoel Romero. Chael questions the need for five round fights on this episode of Beyond the Fight.

  1. Chael in most sports when you get to first round of the playoffs its a best of 5 games and finals are best of 7 games so your Wrong!

  2. There are fighters such as Rory MacDonald who can go the full distance, and there are those that can't. If you're one of those that can, winning a championship is great because it means you get to use an ability that other fighters can't match.

  3. If you want to reduce championship fights from five rounds to three rounds to spare the fighters from damage, ban strikes to the head too.

  4. In hockey during the regular season the game ends after a 5 minute overtime and shootout if the game is still tied but in the playoffs overtime is 20 minutes per period and it goes until someone scores which is called sudden death . So maybe championship fights should be 3 rounds and if its tied on the score card they go until one guy gets the finish

  5. My problem is with 5 round Non-Title fights. I understand from a promotion viewpoint they like 5 rounds as the main event. Bigger numbers sounds more impressive but do we really need to see a it on a Fight Night card? I agree with Chael that the majority aren't improved for it. Not counting Whittaker vs Romero, let's look at recent ones: Maia vs Usman would have still been a snoozefest at 3 rounds. Thompson vs Till would likely have been improved at 3 and Cerrone vs Edwards, while a good fight would probably have been just as good at 3. Even Chael's favourite Kevin Lee vs Barboza would have been fine at 3. A 5 round fight should be saved for a title fight, not a free card. As for title fights, Whittaker Romero was a classic but badly hurt both guys, Stipe vs DC should be good, considering both men's styles I do actually think 5 rounds will benefit them, but I have no plans on watching Woodley vs Covington, whereas Khabib vs McGregor will be fun but probably won't go the distance (I think Khabib by Round 4 submission), so I 5 vs 3 does depend on the fighters. But 5 round non title fights doesn't make sense to me.

  6. I think its all about strategy. Lets say you are winning the first 3 or 4 rounds? Do you back off in the 5th so as to avoid getting knocked out and losing the fight? What if you lost the first 2 or 3 rds and you need the 4th and 5th. A lot of pizza and beer being sold in those 5 rds haha.

  7. I think it should be 4 rounds max and I liked the TUF format where if one guy did enough in 3 he got the win and if it was close they fight a 4th round. If it was like that then EVERYONE would train for 4 rounds. There'd be none of this "He might gas in the champ round" bull we always heard about and it would give guys who may not be great finishers a chance to show what they have WAY before they get into a main event fight. Plus this would give guys who aren't title contenders who headline a card something to prove while also taking emphasis off the main event of non PPV cards. This would also give title holders and contenders more time to actually work on fundamentals of fighting instead of worrying all about cardio.
