  1. Maybe someone on here may know. In 2003 I found a magazine article about a1950's, very limited edition VW Beetle. It was sold in the UK and the steering column came up through the center of the firewall instead of either the left or the right side. The purpose was the steering wheel could be changed from left hand drive to right hand drive via universal joint. Also the pedal assembly could be move from the left seat to the right seat. The Speedometer was in the middle of the dash panel so it could be easily viewed from the right or left side. This was a convenience for those who drove quite often both in the UK and mainland Europe. Is anyone else familiar with this Beetle? I'm thinking it was 1953. I have asked Beetle professionals and enthusiasts all around the world and no one seems to know. But then again, it could have been an owner's ingenious modification.

  2. By the way, he said he used linseed oil to protect the "finish". I used to used surfboard wax on my 86 Tercel. It worked amazingly.

  3. My recall is they were 28 HP not 36. I had a 57 VW as my first car. There was no fuel guage. On the firewall, there was a lever to flip with your foot to open a reserve amount of fuel. I couldn't afford to repair the transmission after breaking 1st/reverse gear. Instead, I could R & R the engine and change out the clutch in less than an hour. It was a fun car but not a race car.
