‘ONE Championship Solved Weight Cutting’: How Do You Know? | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

In the wake of Cynthia Calvillo’s bad weight cut at UFC Argentina, some are asking why UFC doesn’t employ ONE Championship’s putative tactics to combat intentional dehydration. While ONE’s methods – moving everyone up, hydration testing – sound good in theory, they don’t release any weigh-in information to the public or press. As it stands, there is no reviewable evidence that they’ve made any progress. That isn’t to say their methods haven’t worked, but that one way or the other, no one actually knows. Ben Askren spoke highly of their methods on Joe Rogan’s podcast, which is promising, but just anecdotal evidence. Real information about the full extent of the program is simply unknown, which means claims that ‘ONE Championship solved weight cutting’ are unverified.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. So what's the issue with having a weight limit on fight night? Say they are fighting at 155- day of they can't weigh any more than 160. That way guys wouldn't cut more than five-ten pounds because doing so wouldn't gain them anything- and on fight night we would have a more even, competitive fight. If they don't cut massive weight, it shouldn't take but a day to recover- if they do cut too much to recover and perform well- they lose and learn to stop trying to game the system. Are they afraid someone will try it anyway and then maybe die trying to perform still dehydrated? But why would they, if they're not allowed to bulk back up they wouldn't cut so much. I'm sure I'm missing something here- it can't be this easy.

  2. So have they had any fights fall out due to athletes missing weight or getting sick trying to cut weight? I mean it doesn't seem like you would need the actual numbers- if they have fights scheduled, and then you see those fights take place, with healthy athletes- then no one got sick cutting weight. Maybe they aren't holding them to a specific weight- like we do here- but if the fights are working out, the athletes are performing well and the fans are enjoying watching them- then that proves you don't need weight cutting at all. Why the media seems hell bent on shitting on One Championship is beyond me but, you guys seem awfully threatened and I don't get it- you don't work for the UFC- what the hell do you guys care? If they manage to get popular you just have another promotion to cover, more material. I would think that would b what you guys want but, it doesn't seem that way at all.

  3. The actual info on the program

Athletes must submit their current walking weight and daily training weight regularly. Athletes will input and track their daily weight online via a dedicated web portal. Athletes may input data weekly but must include daily weights.

    2. Athletes will be assigned to their weight class based on collated data and random weight checks. Athletes are not allowed to drop a weight class when less than 8 weeks out from an event.

    3. During fight week, weights are checked daily. Urine specific gravity will also be checked the day after arrival and 3 hours prior to the event. Athletes must be within their weight class and pass specific gravity hydration tests all week and up to 3 hours before the event. If an athlete falls outside the weight, or fails a test, they are disqualified from the event. Doctors may request additional testing at their discretion.

    4. Catch weight bouts are allowed. However, the athlete with the higher weight will not be heavier than 105% of the lighter opponent’s weight.

    5. ONE will conduct random weight checks on athletes at our discretion.

    6. Athletes may petition to change weight classes outside of the 8-week competition zone and must be within their new desired weight at that time. In addition, athletes must pass a specific gravity urine test when their weight is within the limits of the newly petitioned weight class. ONE doctors can request additional testing to determine the amount of weight drop allowed over a specific time.

    7. The usage of IVs for the purpose of rehydration will not be allowed.

Overage and limits of weight reduction:

    · 3 weeks to event day: Athlete must be within contracted weight class

    · 4 weeks: 1.5% bodyweight over max

    · 5 weeks: 3%

    · 6 weeks: 4.5%

    · 7 weeks: 6%

    · 8 weeks: +6% max over.

(ONE Chief Doctor may approve up to +/- 0.5% maximum error in any weekly weight check)

  4. fight like a man/woman and compete at what you weigh naturally. get your weight down with natural exercise and diet, sucking water out of your body is terrible for your liver/kidneys really your whole body and what's the point? you're probably worse off the next day with a 20 pound advantage that becomes meaningless because you aren't even functioning

  5. Luke, you and Rogan should do a podcast together about this topic and examine it in detail. This is Rogan's biggest issue with the UFC

  6. "Trust but verify" Ronald Reagan. We believe you one that you solved the weight cut problems. Just show us the scale!! Cynthia looks like she was eating a few to many cheese burgers in her prep. Im just saying, it was a bit more then water there she had to lose to make that cut. She must of had the munchies to much late at night during this camp.
