Chael Sonnen’s solution to stop fighters from missing weight…

Mackenzie Dern is one of many fighters who failed to make weight for their fight. It’s a far too common problem in professional mixed martial arts that you do not see in sports like amateur wrestling. Chael Sonnen gives his take on how to fix this issue.

  1. How to fix weight cutting issues – Add a 165, 195 and 225 weight class and lift the limit off heavyweight instead of making tinier and tinier women's divisions. Then have USADA do hydration tests to make sure your hydrated (to an extent) and weigh in the same day as the fights.

  2. Don't pay them their "showup" money. You're supposed to show up on time, on weight, and on fight night.

They didn't hold up their end, so they don't get paid. Same with fighters that failed drug testing. Zero pay.

  3. Weigh the fighters when the referee checks their cups and gum guards before they step into the cage. If their weight is over, the cage door is closed to them and they have to walk back to the dressing room in shame. Nobody will miss weight.

  4. I've said it before and I will say it again. Remove weight classes, if you're a fighter it shouldn't matter the size of your opponent. Like in the early days of MMA. This is just my opinion however, leave your hateful messages below.

  5. My solution is weigh them the day of the fight, an hour before the fight. That way fighters are in their proper and natural weight classes and missing weight should be just about impossible. Maybe add another class or two and everything is fixed.

  6. just do the scale on the day of the fight, that way fighters won't be able to cut weight as much and will go to their natural weight classes, who misses weight loses 80% of the purse to his opponent and the fight doesn't count on the official record

  7. I agree. Don't allow cheaters to fight. Let's get rid of hydration. There are urine tests.

  8. Fighters should be weighing in the day of the fight, preferably just before stepping into the ring/cage, and should get a DQ loss on their record for missing weight, with their entire share of the purse going to their opponent. That’s how you prevent a 285 pound Brock Lesnar from fighting a 240 pound Randy Couture. Add a couple of weight classes, so they can fight at their natural weight, and we’ll see a lot less grossly uneven matches.
