Monday Morning Analyst: How Alexander Volkov Beat Fabricio Werdum

At UFC London, Alexander Volkov earned the best win of his career by defeating former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum via strikes in the fourth round. However, it wasn’t just the strikes that helped him gain the victory. In fact, it was the Russian’s grappling defense that enabled him to keep the jiu-jitsu world champion at bay, find his moment and finish the fight. Specifically, Volkov showed good guard retention and deep half escapes. In this episode of the podcast, I explain why those were key to his victory. It’s the Monday Morning Analyst with Luke Thomas.

  1. Audio was a little quiet and slightly muffled but the new set up looks great!

  2. This was a great review and Volkov is elite I see him struggling with a few guys with stronger Grappling then Werdum but hes close to #1 Contender if he can take the next step beating a Blades or Overreem(who has become more of a grappler and Defensive striker as of late) he would deserve a shot at Stepe. P.S. Francis would get smashed by Volkov whose too experience to fall for his button-mashing style. Do you think he should already be considered worthy of a title shot?

  3. Volkov is a main star of "Strela team" (Arrow). They have the best bjj team in Russia right now. Alexander not competing in bjj himself but he trains with this guys…
