1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible – Jay Leno’s Garage

Tim Miller of Surf City Garage stops by the garage to show Jay his very rare 4-speed “Yorktown Blue” 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible.

  1. Anyone have info about the outside rear view mirror? It sure looks out of place on the front fender. I looked a a bunch of pictures of '64 GTOs and it is mounted on the fender and on the door (which looks so much cleaner). The Frigidaire radial compressor was probably the best AC compressor ever made. York/Tecumseh vibrated a lot. Not so with the GM unit.

  2. Remember 1966 at Chadron State College, Chadron, NE……was a sophomore and a fella showed up with a very hot '66 hardtop GTO and a sister who was the hottest thing in the school. Even under the influence of my hormones I would have chosen the GTO! The 3-deuce 389 just rumbled! Sweet music! This one didn't seem to have the classic rumble….maybe the video/audio pick-ups.

  3. Still a pretty big car even being considered as a mid-size car. Never understood how the GTO and 442 could be very quick because they were heavy cars.

  4. I wonder if they took the tri-power out of the trunk before the drive. Hey Jay, squeal those red stripe wide ovals around the corner until you hear the thunk in the trunk. I bet the owner would like that.

  5. The horse power (HP) in the 65 tri power was not 348, it was 365 HP. I had two 65 GTOs, one new in 1965 and one in 1984.

  6. This guy restored that car himself? Then why does he think dual reservoir master cylinders were there in 64? And the comment about the “M20/M21” being called a “rock crusher” in the corvette? The rock crusher was an M22, had cross cut gears, and was only used in cars like LS6 chevelles, L88 corvettes, and other later high HP GM applications, not EVERY corvette manual 4spd was a “rock crusher”
