Chael Sonnen wonders why main event and title fights are 5 rounds, instead of three. With Jose Aldo refusing a main event spot due to the increased number of rounds for the same pay, will more fighters follow?

  1. From a fans perspective I believe it has to do with multiple reasons. First reason most likely is to extend cards and try to give fans longer fights and more bang for their buck, second because the fighters who make it to the main event are fighters who are worthy or have shown their worth in the division to that point and get more time to showcase their skills and have more time to market themselves to brands and the fans so they can build a base for themselves and maybe in turn help the company as well. Third so champions or high caliber fighters can prove that they have the skill sets and stamina to be able to have earned that spot in the main event and show they do have the ability to be in the place they’ve earned to be. And lastly so a very close 3 round fight can not fall to the hands of judges and ruin a training camp or the path that the fighters took to get to that level so they have 5 rounds to earn and secure their win in those later championship or main event rounds. But at the same time as a fan I do see all the flaws you bring up about there being 5 rounds for main events.

  2. Champ Fights, Three Rounds, But 7 Minute rounds instead.

    Introduce a 163 Superfighter Division.
