Jose Aldo turned down the main event fight at UFC Fight Night in Brazil for one reason. He did not want to fight 5 rounds. Chael Sonnen weighs in on this episode of Beyond the Fight.

  1. What does MMA need rounds in general? Does anyone need to 2 fighters sit in their buts for 3 to 5 min. a fight and the only fighters the seem to need it are "touch of death" fighters and even then it's only about a 3rd of the time

  2. i disagree wi tall yall 5 rounders were an amazing idea the reason why main events should be longer is cus its the fucking main event its what everything was leading up to its the most important (in theory) fight on the card and should be dealt with in a way that differentiates it from the other fights. typically the fighters that main event cards are the best of the best in the sport at the time so having it 5 rounds is great for weeding out fighters that jus arent on that level. only the best guys will be able to do 5 rounds so it separates the low level guys with the elite ones. how many times do we see fights where a fighter we all know isnt the better guy starts good against the more skilled guy yet over time get outclassed especially in boxing cus the 12 rounds weeds out the lower tier guys

  3. Yes, it's the television deal. Extra rounds means extra commercial and sponsorship revenue. End of story.

  4. 3 rounds is enough i'd rather have fighter's take less damage and have healthy and lorger career's never liked 5 not even on title fights Name any sport that becomes longer just because their is a championship on the line

  5. Maybe this is just being overthought. Fans got used to the main fight being 5 rounds (and for the title). Once you switched away from that (for great fights non the less), you no longer had the 5-round closer….meaning some fans felt like they got less for their money, that is the simple reason why. Cause; some fans complained that the non-title main event ppv's weren't "worth" the buy in like the title fight ppvs…based purely on the lack of rounds. Effect; UFC says you can always have a 5-rounder. In their eyes, they solved a problem for the viewers, ignoring the effect on the actual sport.
