Tyron Woodley vs. Kamaru Usman Could Be Historic For Another Reason | Luke Thomas

Tyron Woodley will be facing Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 (not Colby Covington!) and there’s something worth considering when taking into consideration both the fight and the challenge ahead of Woodley. First, the fight could have stalemates at various point and second, those stalemates – and the ones he’s previously had in other fights – are a function of the fact that no other welterweight champion has had to face elite fighters this uniquely and consecutively as difficult as Woodley.

Georges St-Pierre is still the best welterweight of all time, but no three or four stretch of opponents are as unique from the previous opponents at the championship level as what Woodley has had to face.

  1. The higher ups with the Chipotle franchise want Luke Thomas to refill and replace every single bottle of tobasco sauce he has ever stolen in the past. 😂

  2. This is a stylistic dream match up for Woodley. I cannot see this being competitive.

As far as Woodleys legacy goes, I think he is currently the 2nd best welterweight of all time. To beat GSP, he needs to match the title defence figure.

  3. On balance, GSP "shows up" a lot more than Woodley does. However, if both show up and rise up, Woodley nullifys everything GSP has and GSP will eventually get KO'd.
I also think that modern-days GSP will likely get murdered if he ever agrees to fight modern-days Woodley.

  4. I really wish I never saw the comment where someone said your lower lip looks like a hot dog, because now I can't unsee it

  5. My take on Colby / Tyron / Usman…

Maybe most people have already made up their minds, or maybe they just dont care… but I’m sorta waiting to hear the UFC’s reasoning BEFORE I decide who is more deserving, or… whether or not Colby "got screwed". But, we likely wont hear the UFC’s reasoning for quite a while.. or maybe never.

I’m inclined to side AGAINST Colby. I’m thinking what Tyron said above, that Colby was trying to call shots, is exactly right, and the UFC got fed up and simply moved on from him… and rightfully so. I’m thinking the issue was Colby this time… and I think he blew it.. and here’s why…

Yesterday Colby admitted that he "wasnt able" to take the fight at UFC 228 due to a recent sinus surgery. However, what we heard for what I believe is the first time, is that Colby explained that his reason for not being to take that fight was that AFTER he recovered from that surgery, he would "only" have a 6-week training camp, and he felt that wasnt sufficient.

On Dec 10th, Colby was on the MMA Hour w/ Luke.. and he was asked if he would still be willing to fight at UFC 233 (Jan 26th), which was NOT yet cancelled at that point… and was 7 weeks away. Colby responded by saying that it was only 6 wks away, and that he, as "a real champ", "needed an 8-12 wk camp". He also said that "other champs like DC and Cody Garbrandt get 14 wks or 16-20 wk camps". But, I have to include that at the very end of that interview, Colby DID say that if he was offered 233, he would take it (just because he said it in the interview doesnt mean he said "yes" to the UFC).

My guess is that Colby bickering over how long of a camp he "deserved"… multiple times… is what got the UFC fed up, and they said "ya know what Colby… nevermind!"

We all know, whether right or wrong, the UFC does not like when you turn down opportunities… regardless of how short notice (see Brian Ortega)… especially when they need you. I’ll bet that they thought it was absolutely INSANE when Colby said 6 wks wasnt enough time for 228. For a title fight!! For the fight he was DYING for!! Against his arch rival!!

When he was doing the same thing for 233… maybe thats when they said "fuck it. Peace." Word out there is Kamaru was saying "YES" all these times Colby was saying "NO" or "I need more time". This is pretty much what I think happened.

*Side note… I do not at all understand this whole… training time vs not training / out of shape… vs "now I need 12 wks NOW that I just signed a fight". For Colby… you havent fought since the beginning of June…. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING???? You knew who the opponent was going to be. Why werent you getting as close to ready as possible?! I get that guys arent training to the absolute utmost every single day of the year. But, many fighters say it, and Colby said it yesterday… "all I do is train & stay in the gym". Well then why are you so far from "ready"?

I would actually rather see Tyron vs Colby because I think it will be a better fight & more dramatic & a much more fun build-up… and as a fight fan, thats obviously what I’m interested in. My point here is that I think its Colby that actually fucked up this situation. Period.

Lastly, Colby whining about being "promised" and bringing "his belt" to every interview…. is WACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if he goes jogging with his belt on?

And I’m willing to bet the world that neither Dana nor anyone in the UFC ever used the word "promise" with Colby. Grow up!

  6. Twood has fought a way better list of fighters in his reign compared to gsp. Hes a consistent underdog as a defending champ.

  7. The reason that happens to Woodley is because dana is trying to get him to lose so he's throwing anything he can at him hoping it will work. That is why wonderboy got the quick rematch because dana thought it was close enough that he could beat him in a second fight and that's the same reason you haven't heard of till since the loss really even though he was whooping people until he got to Woodley, but that's how the ufc is controlled.
