Anthony Pettis vs. Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson Is Set

Anthony Pettis vs. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson Is Set | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis is reportedly set to face Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in late March at welterweight (170 pounds). Why would the former lightweight champion want to jump up a weight class against a natural welterweight who is still ranked at the top of the division? And why would Thompson risk a catastrophic loss against someone not in line for a title shot in his division? There are good reasons, actually. While I don’t necessarily love this fight, I do like it and in this video, I explain why.

  1. Literally the only chance for Pettis to win is to create some mad scramble and catch a sub.

Pettis is barely even big enough for 155. He moves up because he perceive no chance of getting a title shot at 155, and he tries to skip the line by fighting Wonderboy, so I kinda get what he is doing. But this fight is so bad for him it makes no sense. He can beat a few guys at 170, like Chiesa who he has already beat. I think he has a good chance against Colby too if he has the right gameplan. Someone like Ponzi or Masvidal is also not out of his reach. But Wonderboy is.
