Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson I: Why Did Views Change? | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

When Jon Jones edged out a victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 to retain the light heavyweight championship, there weren’t just cries of robbery for a week or a month. It lasted for quite some time. Yet, more recently, that sentiment has dramatically waned. While people’s opinions change over time, typically fights are were widely considered robberies, e.g. Shogun Rua vs. Lyoto Machida I, don’t lose that characteristic over time. This one did. Why? I have a few theories. And in any case, when Jones and Gustafsson meet for the second time at UFC 232, I don’t expect the Swede to be the people’s champion as he was immediately following the first bout with Jones. Fans seem to have changed their opinions.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. I think people were screaming robbery because Jones was busted up and they wanted to see him lose. I think Jones KOs him this time.

  2. "some still believe he's a cheater" . How many times do you need to get popped before you believe? Its also interesting nobody mentions Jon's brother also was popped for this, hmm.. Some people no matter how much evidence is there still won't believe. Feels like the OJ trial. Everyone with a brain knew he did it. People are either idiots, don't know the facts, or have an agenda. Usually for media its agenda.

  3. Honestly I just think people have grown to better appreciate the work that Jon did in the last 2 rounds, enough at least to stop calling the decision a robbery. In the moment people wanted to see Jon lose so badly that they categorized a close fight as a "robbery", but now that Jon's been gone and people appreciate Jones as a fighter even if they hate him as a person.

  4. Gus will KO Jones…if someone doesn't pull out or get pulled out of the fight…for a multitude of different possible reasons.

  5. Can we stop saying "the OSP fight didn't go so great" ?
FFS he won every single second of that fight…there wasn't a second you could have given to OSP.
