Eddie Alvarez’s ‘8-Figure’ Contract With ONE: What’s the Truth? | SiriusXM | Luke Thomas

Eddie Alvarez, the former UFC lightweight champion, spoke to ESPN this week and told them he’d signed an eight-figure deal with Asian-based ONE Championship. Alvarez engaged in a Twitter back and forth with writer Jonathan Snowden, who questioned the the truth of the claim. So, what’s the truth? The answer is no one knows and Alvarez is known to be straightforward and candid. If he is getting paid that much, it is very much deserved. But the reality is fighters, promoters and managers routinely lie to the MMA media. Even if Alvarez doesn’t, that practice means verifying unusual claims – ONE Championship exists on venture capitalist funding – is now a requirement of the job.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. 8-figures for Eddie Alvarez? Sorry, they overpaid if that's true. Nobody is paying 8-figures for Eddie. Nobody. I mean if so more power to Eddie.

  2. People caring about this a bit too much. 8 figures, 7, 5, 4 whatever. It comes down to Eddie took the best and better deal which I would wager is better than anything UFC was offering. The take-away is UFC is not the only game in town and that's good for fighters and das it!

  3. I feel like One could confirm this if it were true. And there's nothing wrong with self-promotion by Eddie, and nothing wrong with someone stating the obvious, that claim is dubious. If this becomes a conflict, it would only be bc it's not true, and/or ego gets involved.
