UFC 165-Pound Mock Draft | Luke Thomas

Is it possible to make a 165-pound division in the UFC? We tried to play with the idea on my radio show, holding a mock draft. With names like Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Kevin Lee, Georges St-Pierre and more, is there enough talent to go around? We experiment with the idea to see if it’s possible.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. Overall great fighter suggestions and I enjoyed the draft format. The one thing I'd disagree with you on is the notion that the 155lb and 170lb division might get "a bit drained" by the new 165lb fighters moving up or down. I think what you're forgetting here is that the 155 and 170lb rankings would just get repopulated by interesting fighters ranked ~15-30 that weren't able to get spotlight prior to the 165lb division. E.g., at 155lbs, all of the sudden guys on win streaks like David Teymur, Dan Hooker, Gregor GIllespie, Mairbek Taisumov, Gilbert Burns, etc. are able to have big fights, become bigger names, and help promote the sport. I feel like the more names you can potentially create in the UFC the better. A new division (or even 2) allows more spotlight and opportunities to be offered to more fighters through rankings, promotional resources, big fights, etc. Love the show, Luke.

  2. Theres probably a lot of guys outside of the top 15 in their respective division who could also make up the 165 lbs div. I.e. Krause, GSP, Prazeres, Taisumov, Khabilov and Northcutt.

  3. Mairbek Taisumov. Missed weight coming in at 161 in his last fight, but has been on a great run in his last 6 fights.

  4. Mike Perry would be a good pick. Not many ppl realize this but his first few pro fights were at 155. Despite what he says,, I think he's a little too small for WW

  5. No order Kevin lee tony ferguson paul Felder james vick nate diaz colby Covington jorge masvidal gsp gunnar nelson and chiesa rda cerrone Perry
