UFC 165-Pound Mock Draft | Luke Thomas

Is it possible to make a 165-pound division in the UFC? We tried to play with the idea on my radio show, holding a mock draft. With names like Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Kevin Lee, Georges St-Pierre and more, is there enough talent to go around? We experiment with the idea to see if it’s possible.

The Luke Thomas Show airs weekdays, 3 to 6pm ET, on SiriusXM RUSH, channel 93.

  1. Didn't mention Mike Perry. He cuts almost nothing to make 170. He would be an animal with his size and power, I think he would be a title contender within months.

  2. The UFC's wet dream would be Nate Diaz winning the 165 lb belt, Conor winning the 155 lb belt and doing a trilogy fight for both belts. That said, fuck the idea of a 165 lb belt. It is a solution looking for a problem.

  3. Kevin Lee, Cowboy Cerrone, Nate Diaz, Dustin Poireir, Dos Anjos, Tony Ferguson and of coarse GSP….. That's the beginning of a great 165 division

  4. am I the only one who does not want more divisions?

  5. Hey Luke, Colby Covington was stripped lol. He's no longer the interim champ

  6. Idk about this 165 thing. It seems like once they got past the top ten, they started having trouble coming up with good fighters to flesh out the top 15. …dariush? Really?

  7. echo echo echo… was the sound guy on holliers! ๐Ÿ™‚ still had to listen to cast very good!

  8. 1.Khabib 2. McGregor 3. Tony Ferguson 4. Kevin Lee 5. Tyron Woodley 6. Dos Anjos 7. Michael Cheisa 8. Nate Diaz 9. Dustin Poirier 10. George st. Pierre 11. Jorge Masvidal 12. Sage Northcutt 13. Diego sanchez 14. Glesion Tibau 15. Alex olivera

  9. In no particular order:
    1. Wonderboy Thompson
    2. Khabib Nurmagomedov
    3. Kevin Lee
    4. Georges St Pierre
    5. Colby Covington
    6. Rafael Dos Anjos
    7. Donald Cerrone
    8. Michael Chiesa
    9. Gunnar Nelson
    10. Jorge Masvidal
    11. Paul Felder

  10. If you make 165 and 185 gets thinner because of guys dropping down to 175 it doesn't hurt the prestige of the 185 division. This is because having another division "165" makes guys fighting at 185 seem more like heavyweight fighters because there are 6 divisions below them and only 2 above them.

  11. Luke could you get some foam sound baffles for the walls in your home studio. The echo sounds like you are recording in a bathroom

  12. Sound sucks! You've been uploading long enough to get your shit together. Wtf is the actual problem???

  13. You know why the UFC would do this, is to help Conor get a third belt and him being the first to do it which is bull.

  14. 175 could benefit Hendricks if he came back but also Kelvin Gastelum, Till, and Tyron

  15. At 165: Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz, Dustin Poirier, Dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, Michael Chiesa, Paul Felder, James Vick, Kevin Lee, Alex Oliveira, Khabib (He definitely moves up), Jorge Masvidal, Al Iaquinta, Yancy Madeiros, and unfortunately Colby Covington

  16. 165 would be the best division hands down. All the best fighters are in the middle ground between LW and WW forced to either fight up or down.

  17. No order Kevin lee tony ferguson paul Felder james vick nate diaz colby Covington jorge masvidal gsp gunnar nelson and chiesa rda cerrone Perry

  18. Mike Perry would be a good pick. Not many ppl realize this but his first few pro fights were at 155. Despite what he says,, I think he's a little too small for WW

  19. Mairbek Taisumov. Missed weight coming in at 161 in his last fight, but has been on a great run in his last 6 fights.

  20. Theres probably a lot of guys outside of the top 15 in their respective division who could also make up the 165 lbs div. I.e. Krause, GSP, Prazeres, Taisumov, Khabilov and Northcutt.

  21. Overall great fighter suggestions and I enjoyed the draft format. The one thing I'd disagree with you on is the notion that the 155lb and 170lb division might get "a bit drained" by the new 165lb fighters moving up or down. I think what you're forgetting here is that the 155 and 170lb rankings would just get repopulated by interesting fighters ranked ~15-30 that weren't able to get spotlight prior to the 165lb division. E.g., at 155lbs, all of the sudden guys on win streaks like David Teymur, Dan Hooker, Gregor GIllespie, Mairbek Taisumov, Gilbert Burns, etc. are able to have big fights, become bigger names, and help promote the sport. I feel like the more names you can potentially create in the UFC the better. A new division (or even 2) allows more spotlight and opportunities to be offered to more fighters through rankings, promotional resources, big fights, etc. Love the show, Luke.
