The case for a 165 pound weight class in the UFC…

Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier proposed fighting at 165 pounds at Madison Square Garden but there has been reluctance from Dana White and the UFC to open a new weight class. Chael Sonnen gives his thoughts on a special on the road edition of his You’re Welcome podcast.

  1. Maybe Jon Jones knows he would still piss hot if he got tested right now so he’s putting off fighting for as long as he can 😂

  2. couldn't they just move the welterweight title to 175lbs?? that way each weight class is 10lbs away from 1 another all the way from 125 to 185

  3. Move welterweight to 175lbs and give Woodly the choice to drop to 165lbs as champ or take it to 175lbs with him. Call the 165lb class Jr welterweight or call the 175lb class Jr middle. That way there is a 10lb gap at all the lower weight classes and keep heavy and light heavy the same. I think this would be easier for everyone.

  4. Chael all you do is make welterweight 175. That is a necessary change and just give Tyron the belt at 175

  5. Where did the UFC get the idea to do this 165-lb title?

Does Dana finally realize this is good for the UFC or is he just making up a new division on a week's notice to save the 230 card?

Kevin, Rafael, Nate, and GSP have all spoken about the need for the division.

Lee even said he would move up specifically because 155 is so crowded.

Fit the fighter to the weight-class, not the other way around.

Into the new weightclass would go Tony, Khabib, maybe Conor, Colby, RDA, Nate, who else?

All of the smaller lightweights would remain at 155, and even the bigger featherweights like Max should probably move up since the 155 picture will be a lot less crowded now.

This is probably the second best thing that could happen to UFC, but the absolute best thing would be for you to read the first word of every sentence in this post.

  6. Are we going to keep a 5 lb difference between 165 and 170? Or are they going to change welterweight to 175lbs? How about 195lbs weight class?
