Nick Newell, a lightweight MMA fighter and congenital amputee, will be given an opportunity to compete for a UFC contract on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. The show airs on Fight Pass and is likely a replacement for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). In short, this is progress. I’m happy for Newell. However, some of the arguments used to justify the decision to not put him on a UFC card immediately are poor.
